LAPD vs. NYPD
On May 3, 2008, the Centurions Football Team hosted the NYPD Finest Football Team, at Salesian High School. Both teams are members of the National Public Safety Football League. This game was the rematch of 2007 (NPSFL) National Championship Game. NYPD defeated the Centurions 36-20 in that game.
The Centurions were determined to protect their home turf and avenge their defeat from last season. This game was considered to be the premier game of the 2008 season. NYPD arrived in Los Angeles with 90 players and 20 staff members. They also were determined to keep their winning streak alive. Both teams were undefeated and ready for action. From the first play of the game both teams came out fired up.
NYPD scored first with a field goal. The Centurions tough defense scored after Louis Lavender returned an interception for a touchdown. NYPD was determined to recapture the lead and did so by returning the kick-off for a touchdown. The Centurions struggled on offense after loosing one of their top receivers Craig Allen to injury. At half time the score was 10-7 NYPD.
After coming out for the second half kick-off, the Centurions made a serious mistake, fumbling the ball, giving NYPD the ball inside of the red zone. NYPD capitalized on the mistake and scored on a touchdown pass, extending the lead to 16-7. The Centurions high-powered offense woke and began picking the Finest defense apart. The Centurion offensive line had the best day of the season, dominating the excellent defensive line of the Finest. The Centurions ran the ball effectively with running backs Brian Cook and Johnathan Hanania.
The Centurions started their come back late in the third quarter with a touchdown catch by David Romines, to bring the score to 16-14 NYPD. The Centurions scored again off of a screen pass to rookie wide receiver Bobby Meza, bringing the score to 21-16 Centurions. The centurions extended the lead to 24-16 after Owen Burger kick a field goal. The Finest would not quit. They took the ball and scored with 1:20 left on the game clock, bringing the score to 24-22 Centurions. The Finest then converted on a 2 point play with an excellent run by their quarterback tying the score 26-26.
The game went into overtime with NYPD going on offense first. The stout Centurions defense stood up to the task and shut down the high powered attack of the Finest. The Centurions went on offense and scored with a touchdown pass to David Romines.
